Every time I run a course on Freelance Writing, students who have had some success, ask the same question — Why have the jobs dried up?

This is what happens: A writer has been doing very well and the majority of queries sent to particular magazines have generated commissions. Even articles sent to publications on speculation have normally had a good success rate. And then success turns to rejection.

Here are four suggested causes:

  • First, you may have become complacent. When you originally targeted the magazine or newspaper you probably researched it carefully. But when your queries were accepted regularly, you may not have taken the time to check the publications again to make sure you were still writing articles that fitted the magazines’ house styles.

Magazines must keep up with trends in both advertising and content and editors make subtle changes in almost every issue.

Writers need to make sure they pick these up and make the necessary changes to their material.

  • Second, editors are fairly transient people and move from one magazine to another more frequently than writers would like to think.

You may have built up a very good relationship with one particular editor and when that person moves on, you must once again build rapport with the new editor.
This is compounded when the new editor has a different style that he/she has been asked to introduce into the publication.

Now you have two problems — A new editor and a different style.

  • Third, you have let your “writing” slip. You are really only as good as the last article you have had published. Yes, you have had a good reputation in the past, but editors want to know that you can continually come up with great ideas, write terrific copy and file your article before deadline.
  • Fourth, you simply have not been sending enough queries or writing articles on speculation. Selling is an important part of being a freelance writer. You are a free agent and your style and content must always be saleable. And, you must know who is editing which publication.

You’ve all seen the adverts. “Freelance writers wanted!” they
scream from the pages of just about every freelance jobs site on
the Internet. “Get paid to blog!”

To many people, this sounds like some kind of dream job. If you
keep a blog yourself (and Google says that a few thousand of us
do), then the chances are you’re currently blogging for free,
either because you see blogging as a good opportunity to drive
traffic to your website, convert traffic that’s already there
into sales, or just because you feel you have something to say.

If this sounds like you, then of course you’re going to jump at
the opportunity to get paid for something you’d do for free. Who
wouldn’t? And if you’re a freelance writer looking for work,
you’re probably going to jump at the opportunity to: you write,
you make money. What could be simpler?

Well, the paid-to-blog business isn’t quite that simple,
unfortunately. You see, you’re technically not being paid to
blog. What you’re doing is blogging on someone else’s website,
and being given a share of the Google Adsense profits your posts
make - in most cases, 50% goes to you, the rest to the web page
publisher.

Still sound good? It may well do. After all, on the Internet,
content is king. There’s good money to be made from Google
Adsense (the program whereby you displays Google adverts on your
website and are paid every time someone clicks on them). Isn’t
there?

Well yes, there is. But in order to make money from blogging on
an Adsense site, you’re going to need to be able to do more than
just write. First of all, you’re going to have to be able to
identify a niche to write in. This can’t be just any old niche,
either: it has to be one which you can churn out content on, day
in, day out - and content which people will want to read.

You also have to know how to drive traffic to the content you
create. On the paid-to-blog sites, some of the traffic is
already there: but in order to make real money from this type of
writing, you’ll need even more traffic than that. Where are you
going to get it? What do you know about internet marketing?
About driving traffic to websites? What do you know about search
engine optimisation? You’ll need knowledge of all of these
things if you want to make money from blogging - and even if you
have that knowledge, you’ll still need the energy and enthusiasm
to blog every day.

Say you have all of that. What can you make?

Theoretically, there’s no limit to what you make. There are
people out there making a very nice living from blogs and
adsense. There are even more people, though, who aren’t making a
cent. Realistically, you’re much more likely to fall into that
second group. So, is blogging for money a great freelance
writing opportunity?

In a word, no. Blogging networks are great places for people
who’d like to make a few dollars per month doing something
they’d happily do for free anyway, or for people looking for a
lively blogging community to join. They’re not for serious
freelance writers who want to make a living wage from their
writing.

Still want to make money from blogging? Find a corporate giant
who needs someone to maintain their blog - and is willing to pay
for it. Save the paid-to-blog network for your free time.

What should you consider when you are writing an article? Well, it depends upon what you want to convey to your reader. Do you want to inform, present the issues, or complain? How do these styles of writing, and the words you use, effect your readers and your traffic?

Information for your Reader

On the Internet, the most prevalent of articles is the informative article. Readers on the Internet connect to your article because they want to learn, or resolve an issue that they are currently facing. The “How To” or “factual” piece should present viable facts and possible solutions to the reader. These types of articles can increase your creditability on the Internet as an Expert.

Pro and Con Article

With this type of article you can slant the article either for or against. Or, you can present both sides, and let your reader draw their own conclusions. In either case, whether you are for, or against the issue, back it with facts. Why? As always, your creditability is on the line.

To Complain

Okay, this article really isn’t a type, but one I felt I had to address. In this case, the writer uses the article as a pulpit to express his complaints. If it is presented tastefully, you will get people to listen. However, if it is more of an “I’m mad at the whole world” scenario - then this writing, I personally feel, should be reserved to a blog - your own.

Example of my own experience with a complainer.

It has been my habit, to read several articles of a writer, just to get a feel for the author, and possibly see if a little of his personality may seep into the article.

Anyway, I came across this website, and read several of this individual’s articles. To my dismay, I found the articles that I read, biting and uninformative. I began to wonder if this person ever had anything good to say about anything, or anyone. So to give the individual the benefit of the doubt, I read several more articles. To my dismay, the complaining and criticism continued. I found it distasteful, uninformative, and with all the negativity that flowed through the person’s words, it actually gave me a headache. Needless to say, the individual lost my vote, and I clicked away. Lesson learned–if you complain - make sure you can support your claims - and don’t do it too often, or over time you will lose your readers.

There are positive and negative ways of presenting your words to your reader. The choice is yours as to how you want to present them (words). But remember, the click of the mouse is still the choice of the reader.

Getting large amounts of people to your web site can be as easy
as writing a few articles. I have found that writing articles
can bring in huge amounts of traffic when done correctly. You
can literally find your articles in front of millions of web
sites on the search engines results, for popular search terms.
All this can be done for the price of a well written article.

I have written many articles that have grabbed the attention of
search engines. The reason the articles are placed on the first
pages of Google, Yahoo, and, MSN is mainly due to the fresh new
content that the articles possess. I have written quite a few
articles, but one that I recently wrote was titled “Easy ways to
get noticed by search engines” this article brought in an
amazing amount of free traffic to my web site. I was shocked to
learn, that when a search into Google was done for “ways to get
noticed by search engines” Google came up with 20,800,000
results for that search term. Guess who’s article at the time,
was positioned in spots, #1, #4, #6, if you guessed my article
you are right!

The most important thing you should remember when you write an
article is that “The Job of the Search Engine is to, Bring Up
the Most Relevant Web Site, for a Particular Searched Term”.

Getting search engines to bring up your articles is, just one of
the reason that makes writing articles for traffic so
attractive. The content can be what ever you want it to be. Just
remember to come up with a good title that is relevant to your
article. For example if you make soap at home, you can write an
article about anything that is relevant to soap making, and you
can even use multiple articles, and topics, to bring in several
streams of traffic to your web pages. You can write an articles
that covers” how to make home made lavender soap.” with a combo
of another article written about “The history of LYE in soap
making” If you follow the steps that I cover in this article, it
is very possible that when a person searches for “lavender
soap”, and “Lye for soap making” it will be easy for people to
come across your articles using the search engines. From there
the reader is just one link away from your web site.

For starters, understand that it is crucial to have keywords in
the title of the article. It is also very important to have the
same keywords in the body of the article. Try to use the
keywords in the article as many times as possible, without
making it obvious that you are loading the article up with
keywords.

If you do not get anything from my article at least understand
this “The job of search engine is to bring up the most relevant
pages for particular a search word, or phrase”. Write a relevant
article, and I can guarantee the article will find it’s way to
the first pages of the search engines.

I will give you a few ideas on how you can use this to your
advantage. No matter what your web site, or on-line business is
about you can write an article about it. People are searching
for almost every topic the world has to offer, in other words,
if you write it, they will read it!

Here are a few article writing tips that will help you to bring
in massive amounts of free traffic from the search engines.

1.) The keywords, that your article focuses on needs to be in
the title. I found that “Easy ways to get noticed by search
engines” worked extremely well.

2.) Inside the body of the article you need to use the same
keywords that are in the title. For the example I used earlier I
repeatedly used the keywords “search engines, and noticed” etc..
as many times as possible. (don’t go crazy with this step
however remember it, is important.) The purpose of this step is
to write an article that is relevant to those particular
keywords, or phrase. ( I really can’t stress that point enough
I’ll repeat that one more time!) The purpose of this step is to
write an article that is relevant to those particular keywords,
or phrase.

3.) Submit your article to as many article directories as
possible. Not all directories are created equal some have a
popular appeal to search engines while other directories have no
appeal what so ever.

4.) All article directories have a resource box. This is where
you can get your readers to your web site. Here is something
that I might include in the resource box. I am Michael Ditch if
you liked my article you might like to visit my web site at (
add the link htpp….) where you can learn great Internet
Marketing tips, and learn hundreds of techniques to bring
thousands of people to your web site. (I used this is just an
example, you can write what ever you would like to, but what
ever you write, it should cover the “why I want to visit your
web site.”)

5.) Writing articles takes practice, but “practice makes
perfect!” The greatest thing about writing articles you can
write about anything, and you only have to write it once!

6.) Remember not to forget the important things like the “Who,
What, Where When, and Whys” Include a short introduction, body,
and conclusion.

(warning) Do not write an advertisement, no one likes to read
advertisements. in the first place and, the article directories
will not post your article if you write an advertisement.

Here is another beauty of writing articles, web site owners need
content. They will search, and search for new content to put on
their web sites. If they like your article they will post your
article in their blogs, on their web sites. That might frighten
you, but here is the deal, if they use an article that you
write, they have to include the resource box information. That
is a big bonus for you because, you will have another link
pointing back to your web site for no cost.

Another benefit to writing an article, is just when the search
engine gets tired of your article, and places it on page 5, or 6
that article can come back to life again, on page one, all
because someone placed it in their blog, or web site. If you
write articles about your business, or your web site, in time,
you will have thousands of sites, that have links that point
back to your web site. If that is not motivation enough to write
than I do not know what is!

So get out there and start writing relevant content.
