A relatively new concept in the online world is “Virtual Real Estate Investing“. Everything from using the internet as an avenue to make more money in real estate to online games such as SecondLife seem to be included in the popular definition of this term.

To get the facts, I sought out the man generally considered to be the father of virtual real estate investing: Bryan Ellis.

When I began using the term virtual real estate investing in the late 1990s, I did so because I saw clear parallels between the strategies used for profiting from physical real estate and those that would create income in the online world, said Ellis.

An example of the similar nature of “virtual” and “physical” real estate Bryan Ellis likes to point out is the methods of making a profit from domain names compared to physical real estate. “These types of assets - websites and physical real estate - can be monetized in very similar ways like buy lo/sell high, leasing/rental and advertising opportunities” he says.

The similarities really are obvious. After all, if you own a valuable piece of real estate, it’s “valuable” because other people are interested in that specific piece of property. Similarly, ownership of a desirable domain name is valuable for the same reasons. So it doesn’t matter if you own physical real estate or virtual real estate - you’ll likely use similar strategies to turn them into money in your pocket.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing., Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

I’m a plain man when it comes to making money online; I just do what I do and try to make an honest buck wherever I can without upsetting anyone.

Now and again though fate steps in and sends you a prospect where you have to figure out for yourself where he or she is coming from and where in fact they think they’re heading.

I got one such prospect a few weeks ago in the shape of Rocco, a gentle giant from Brooklyn.

How do I know Rocco is a giant?

He emailed a picture of himself towering over his significant other and some friends.

How do I know he’s gentle?

Read on…

Rocco emailed me expressing interest in three of my products but he didn’t want them in digital format (which would have cost him $107 in total) he wanted hard copy.

I suggested CD formatting.

He got back to me saying, “No, I don’t want CDs, I want hard copy. I’ll pay a grand”

So now I thought, loony tunes, but I emailed Rocco back intimating that if he deposited $200 in my PayPal account I’d give him what he wanted; hard copy on all three products

I reckoned I would hear no more but the following morning on checking my PayPal account I discovered to my astonishment that one thousand dollars had been deposited.

I can’t take this man’s money I protested and I told him so.

Rocco got back to me within the hour.

His brusque message read, “I said a grand, I meant a grand, so take a grand”.

So I took Rocco’s grand.

Wouldn’t you?

I mean who wants to be emailed to death…

The moral:

Never assume you know better than prospects - or what they are prepared to pay - and why. Maybe Rocco has a sight problem beyond my ken or maybe he finds it difficult to read from a computer screen. I will never know for sure but this I do know. Rocco is delighted with the hard copy he craved.

He told me so… in yet another email.

There are no 3rd party products to setup your accounts, but that does not mean that the setup of accounts is not important to the safety of your PC. Under Windows XP, there are two accounts created by default: “administrator” and “guest.” Since those are created by default, anyone who might want access to your PC has a headstart. They know those default account names, so they can focus on the passwords for those accounts (a big time-saver for breaking into your PC). How should the be done?

REMOVE DEFAULT ACCOUNTS - Remove (or, at least limit) those two default accounts: “administrator” and “guest.” Of course, you need an account with administrative privileges in order to maintain your PC. You need it to install most software and you need it to run the defragmentation system utility. So what are you to do?

CREATE ACCOUNT NAMES - Create an account with administrative privileges and use a strong password. Create another account for your normal use. Avoid account names which are common names. Try names like “PC2b” or “widget222.” Better yet, mispell a word like “paradocs.” The idea is to make it difficult for someone to guess, but easy for you to remember.

SET ACCOUNT PRIVILEGES - Of course, give your new administrative account the administrative privileges that it must have. Give your account for normal use a “limited use” privilege level. That way, if someone breaks into your account, they do not have the full run of the PC (as they would with administrative privileges). The rule to follow is to give each user (if you share your PC) the minimal set of privileges that are required to do necessary work on the PC.

CREATE ACCOUNT PASSWORDS - As with account names, passwords need to be difficult for someone to guess, but easy for you to remember. Avoid passwords which are common names like Barbara. Use a length of 6-12 characters and include numeric and special characters. Try passwords like “brin2x” or “2928here24.” Use upper and lower case (passwords are case sensitive), such as “eMail4mE.” Use the first letter of each word in a sentence, such as “Egbdvw” for the sentence “Every good boy does very well.” For stronger passwords, consider combinations of these. Use upper/lower case to change “brin2x” to “bRiN2x.” Use upper/lower case and a numeric character to change Egbdvw” to “EGb6dVW.” If you like automation, you can even use a password generator. You define how complicated you want the password to be, and the password generator creates one for you. (FaceTime’s X-Cleaner, including the freeware version, will generate one for you.)

CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS REGULARLY - Change all passwords from time to time. Perhaps you will want to set a date in your calendar to change your password on a monthly basis. Keep this in mind for other passwords that you use, not just account passwords on your PC.

DO INTELLIGENT MAINTENANCE - Incorporate as much PC maintenance and control as possible without hindering your PC operations. That is “Intelligent Maintenance” for a safe PC.

NOTICE - This article contains suggestions for utility programs under the Windows operating system. They are based on years of use, but they may not be the right suggestion for you and your PC environment. Substantial opportunities for increased sales and profits are missed by not seeking out and implementing joint ventures.

Strategic alliances also create value for the customer and save money and build future relationships for the partners.

They don’t have to be complicated, and they can be negotiated and launched quickly.

First, a quick and simple example. A bank that sends its statements out each month is approached by a ski resort. The resort offers an exclusive introductory discount to the bank’s clients. 1. The bank gets to look good by offering something of value to their customers at little or no cost to the bank. 2. The customers save money and hopefully become long-time customers. 3. The resort gains exposure and potentially new guests–with no mailing expense.

That’s called a triple win.

All it takes is a little imagination and the commitment to make it happen. The potential is substantial.

And they’re fun. They provide some diversity and variety that makes work more interesting.

Begin with giving more than you expect to receive. What can you offer another company? What can the other company provide that you don’t have–or would be expensive to obtain? A little brainstorming, some planning and some follow-through, and you can easily create a profitable joint venture.

Do it once, fine tune it, and then do it again with the knowledge and experience you’ve gained.

The possibilities are endless.

The joint ventures you don’t seek out and execute represent huge sums left on the table.

Put together a project team this week. Generate ideas on how and with whom you might partner. Create your triple win.

What’s a small business owner to do if they have more than one audience to market to? Perhaps they need to attract clients but they also need to recruit business partners or vendors. Do they need two marketing plans or can they use one plan that tries to address both aspects?

This is a great question that applies to many different types of businesses who find they need to market to more than one group of people. You only need one marketing plan. However, you will have two different target audiences within that plan and you’ll need to have a marketing strategy for EACH of these audiences.

The reason you’ll need separate strategies and marketing activities to go with those strategies is because you will be talking to two very different audiences. And it will be important for you to speak and market to them based on what is important to them.

A message that works with one group may not hit home with the other. This will in large part depend on how similar or different these groups of people are. Your first task is to learn as much as you possibly can about each group. What problems do they each have that you can solve?

Make sure you can answer the following 10 questions about both groups of people:

1. Who are they?

2. Where do they live … work … play?

3. What problem do they have that you can solve?

4. How does your product or service fit into their life?

5. What else do they buy in your product or service category?

6. Where do they get information regarding your product/service?

7. What is most important to them?

8. What are they most afraid of?

9. What is their emotional connection to your product/service?

10. How will they rationalize purchasing your product/service?

If you can answer these questions you’ll be ready to create marketing strategies to successfully win over each group.

Brandi Carlile, the deeply driven 23 year old Seattle area native has released her debut self titled album and Wow! It’s good.
As the story goes the young Carlile’s life long love affair with performing really took flight after she sang Roseanne Cash’s Tennessee Flat - Top Box onstage at the Northwest’s version of the Grand Ole Opry. She was reportedly 8 at the time and the opportunity came as a result of being brought out by her musician mother.

Well here we are some 15 years later and Miss Carlile has arrived on the music scene with wide eyes and a voice as fresh and clear as a bell.

As for her drive to get to this point she says, “I’ve never had a real job. I’ve insisted that I do nothing but play music and not let my head go anywhere else. If that means playing in a smoky bar for three hours, five nights a week, that’s fine. It’s discipline. It teaches you how to grab your audience, no matter who they are.” You sure do have to admire that kind of dedication.

Carlile’s determination and work ethic paid off in late 2004 when she signed with Columbia Records, home to several of her favorite artists, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, and James Taylor, whom she has shared a stage with.

This, her debut album is a showcase for her very expressive voice, which can turn from a tough, bluesy growl to a vulnerable, aching falsetto on a dime. The catch in her throat before she launches into those alpine high notes is reminiscent of her idol, country singer Patsy Cline.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are What Can I Say [track 2], Throw It All Away [track 4], and In My Own Eyes [track 8]. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore […as in “Stuck On REpeat”] is track 6, Someday Never Comes. Very nice!

If you do not understand what you are doing you will not get to the top of any multi level marketing program. You need to love and use the products but you also need to keep in mind what you are really selling. The top network marketing companies did not get there because of people selling their product. They got there because of people selling their marketing program. The rewards come not from selling a box of soap, but from selling a business dream. Each time you duplicate yourself you increase your income. Each time you teach a complete understanding of your marketing plan you increase your potential for riches.

Our next door neighbor started her multi level marketing program about two years ago. No one would have guessed that she could have become so successful at it. She did not care where her company ranked among the top network marketing companies, she only cared about what she could do with the plan. Today she sits on the executive board and boasts one of the highest producing down lines in the company. She has always been innovative in her approach to the business. She treats it like a real job and has established regular office hours so her down lines can know when to contact her with questions about building their business.

Have you ever encountered an experience when someone told you how fat you’ve become? Maybe your boss have commented on how bad your work turned out to be. Maybe you’ve heard from other folks how people view you as cold and unapproachable.

Hurts, doesn’t it?

Believe it or not, some people can be so tactless that they are not even aware when they’ve hurt anyone’s feelings. The receiving parties, especially the sensitive ones, would be offended by their remarks. This would result in conflicts and arguments.

You know you’re doing them a big favor by saving them from shame or disappointment, but would they realize your good intentions instead of feeling hurt by your brutally frank comments or advices?

They might probably think you’re too rude or impolite. But what can you do if you really need to assert an honest criticism, but you’re afraid of hurting others’ feelings?

Want to know the secret?

All you have to do is sandwich your negative comment between two positive remarks.

For example, your best friend Paul is going on his very first date. He’s all excited and raring to go. Now Paul doesn’t have any fashion sense. He’s wearing a bland shirt and old jeans. You know all along how he hates to admit that he’s wrong. So what will you do to save Paul from an embarassing first date?

Would you say to him that the outfit he’s wearing is repulsive? That would hurt his ego.

Well, you can first point out the things that you like in his overall appearance. Comment on his well-groomed hair. Tell him he looks cool when wearing his sunglasses. Ask him where he bought his perfume because it can certainly attract women like bees to honey. Be sincere and honest.

Then, insert in a nice and suave manner your point of view and advice. You can tell him something like:

“Your shirt seems to be very comfortable to wear, Paul. Since this is your very first date, I think Sandra (his date) will be much more impressed if you would wear something like the outfit that you wore on my birthday. You look smashing when you put on clothes like that.”

Afterwards, make another positive statement. You could say something like:

“You would definitely make a big impact on Sandra. She would fall heads over heels over your gorgeous appearance and cheerful personality. Have a great time on your date, Paul.”

Do you think Paul would be offended by such pleasant comments? Not a chance. You have wittingly inserted a slightly negative feedback into a plethora of acceptable and ego-boosting remarks.

People love compliments. They believe they got the qualities. They want other people to intensify the great abilities that they believe to possess. People wanted to hear their greatness purported from someone else’s mouth, and they would be very glad if other individuals would know about it.

So if you want to criticize anybody, remember to praise him first. It will leave a positive impression that you’re a nice guy. Then say what you have to say, but in a smooth and non-offensive manner. Finalize with another positive reinforcement to establish a foundation of goodwill.
