Video Speed Dashboard is the new information panel that users can use to get information regarding their broadband connection. This new service has been introduced by YouTube for its users.

The benefit of this dashboard is that users can get information about their connection speed and be prepared about their video watching experience. Most of the time video watching is not problem- free. One has to wait for it to buffer. This can be avoided if prior information about the broadband connectivity can be had with the help of the video speed dashboard.

Although a fast download speed helps in good viewing, the distance of the server from the video downloading location is also a key factor in deciding the quality of the video watching .The speed showed on the dashboard is generally the average speed that the particular user is experiencing for one month. Thus to get an accurate picture of the status of broadband connectivity one must continue to use the same internet browser for one month.

It is important to note that there is no way that the speed dashboard can be used to solve the problem of bad connectivity. Since the dashboard also provides a comparative speed of YouTube connectivity at different locations a user can decide to change the internet service provider if he finds that another provider is giving better connectivity. This service can be availed by logging on to youtube.com/my_speed.

If you need more information on broadband, or the various ISPs, look at broadbandgenie.co.uk. It is worth a look at the website for and their broadband comparison table of internet providers, which includes an analysis of their products and services and all the information you need to get up and running on broadband internet.

Not being very technical or a big follower of the most recent telecommunication news, I was completely unaware until recently that you can use the same ‘VoIP’ technology to make international free calls. VOIP is a relatively new technology which has surpassed the telephone companies, as well as the mobile phone networks. Its popularity is steadily increasing with the increasing pervasiveness of broadband connections. It has shown itself to be an game-changing technological advancement which has created a novel mode of telecommunication by making the most of the internet. VOIP is an abbreviated form of Voice Over Internet Protocol.

With the introduction of VOIP technology, the making of calls has become easy and cheap. It’s now not hard to make a local, long distance, and overseas calls from your mobile by tapping into a wireless internet connection or using a VoIP phone with a broadband net connection.

One of the most impressive advantages of VoIP technology is the various new and advanced features it allows you to enjoy, such as easy to set up conference calling. There are many value added services offered by the various VOIP service providers. For example, there is voice mail facility, 3-way conference, speed dialling, call forwarding, simultaneous ring, call waiting, caller ID, call return, caller ID block, anonymous call rejection, an interesting feature of do not disturb, and last number dial. All these services are mostly free of cost in their basic service plan.

T-Mobile has announced that its proposed merger with Orange will create the largest service provider in the UK and that the 28.4 million-customer base of the combined entity will get better services than what the companies provide separately. Subscribers will get 2G and 3G facilities, better customer care, more access to stores and services, wider coverage and better performance. The company also said that after the merger, the new entity would be investing in further research to come up with better technology. Therefore, this merger is destined to change the face of the telecoms industry in the coming years.

However, Orange Broadband has commented that the customers will have to wait for a while for these benefits. The merger is not scheduled to be completed before 2012 as it has a timeline of one and a half years. Even if the procedure it speeded up, it will not be completed before 2010. Until the merger takes place, there will not be any major change in services for the customers. Orange said it would be conducting its business as it always does till the merger - for a look at each of the service providers, click compare broadband.

There will be an equal partnership of both the companies but it has not been clarified as to which company is merging into the other. While it will provide better services among other things, the merger will cause loss of jobs in a market already suffering from recession. Both the companies together employ close to twenty thousand workers, and will not need all of them after they are merged. Further, it will reduce phone masts, at least by five thousand.

Mobile broadband customers of O2 can now work without bothering about finding the right technical support for their systems. This responsibility will be shouldered by O2 itself, with its ‘O2 Tech Support’ service that has been launched recently.

O2 will provide expert technical support and solutions to a variety of issues that give users a hard time. Customers can either pay £7.34 per month for minimum three months to avail this service, or can choose to pay as per their use of the service for upwards of £14.69 per query, with a ‘No Fix - No Fee’ policy.

Jonathan Earle, head of Pay Monthly at O2 commented that customers find a one-stop shop experience more convenient. They look for one outlet on which they can rely for all their requirements, from placing orders to registering complaints. O2 Tech Support will provide just that, so that customers don’t have to worry about malfunctioning systems any more.

It is to be noted that O2

If you have been excited about BT’s 40Mb for 40 per cent of the UK by 2012 promise, then this one could take your breath away. The Technology Strategy Board, popularly known as the TSB, has offered £1million for research to develop a technology, which would make it possible to supply homes and businesses with a broadband connection with a 10GB speed.

With the current technologies, broadband connectivity of this kind would require optical cables to be laid across the UK. The cost of setting up such a cable network as estimated by the Broadband Stakeholder Group comes to about £29 billion.

Besides the costs, the challenges TSB needs to overcome if it wants to make such a network a reality are numerous. Mike Biddle who holds the position of the lead technologist at TSB said that it was very important to overcome these challenges if an ultra fast network has to be provided to the people. If you’re not sure of your broadband speed, click the broadband speed checker here.

Biddle pointed out that collaborations with other European countries could play a significant role in achieving this. This, he said, would provide a major competitive advantage to European companies over their competitors from rest of the world.

TSB is sponsored by the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills. For some time now, they have been zeroing in on the right targets to infuse funds of £30000 to £100000 into.

Communication is important for us. Since the development of the internet, it has made communication faster and more efficient by using emails.

With this technology, researchers and developers invented the Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP for short. VoIP works like your regular landline phone, but instead of using telephone lines, VoIP uses the internet to transmit voice and video data to the person you are calling. With VoIP, it is possible to make free or cheap long distance calls.

VoIP not only enable us to call long distance free, but also lets us view the person we are calling with the use of a webcam or videophone.

With free long distance calls and conferencing, VoIP benefits businesses in many ways. Many features offered by VoIP free or at a minimal cost enabled VoIP literally replace traditional phones.

VoIP is probably the best way to keep in touch with your business associates and customers.

With VoIP it can make your business, either small or large, have an edge against your competitors.

Here are some features that can benefit your business by using VoIP:

With video conferencing capabilities, you can conduct meetings and presentation right in your own office. No longer will you spend expensive travel expenses when using VoIP. It allows you to close deals with your customers a lot faster than before.

Save money on phone bills. With VoIP, this is possible. You will just pay your monthly internet connection bills and small fees to your VoIP internet service provider allowing more profits for your business.

Not only that VoIP is limited to calling other VoIP phones, but it also allows you to call mobile phones, regular phones, and long distance or international numbers for a very low cost.

With the technology to take your own personal VoIP number, it is possible to make and receive calls anywhere you are in the planet as long as there is an internet connection. This feature allows you to not miss any business opportunities or emergencies while you travel.

This means more business deals, therefore, more profits and also you can take care of your clients while you travel, answering their important questions about your products or services.

A business wants to minimize expenses in order to gain more profit, therefore allowing the business to grow. With VoIP, it can significantly cut your phone expenses, traveling expenses, and more.

However, no matter how many great features VoIP offer, it still depends on your internet connection. If you plan to integrate VoIP in your business, be sure your internet connection is high speed and reliable in order to prevent voice delays or being cut off.

Remember that good communication is crucial for a business to succeed, meaning that a voice lag can mean the difference of an answer to your business associates or clients. A one-second delay may not seem much but it can make the difference of a simple “yes” or “no” answer. This can lead to misunderstanding, therefore, possible of not making the deal.

Choosing the VoIP service provider is also an important factor for your business. Choose one that offers maximum voice quality and reliability.

Also, remember that features such as caller ID, call waiting, speed dialing, call forwarding, video phone, voice mails, call logs, conference calls, long distance or international calls, and call hold should be offered cheap or no fee at all.

Bob Hett has extensively covered the VoIP Service Provider industry as an analyst and has researched the various companies for factors based on price, reliability, support and overall quality. Learn more at VoIP for Business

It seems Mobile broadband is the word on everyone’s lips as technology companies prepare themselves to maximize their gains from this massive opportunity. Microsoft, the biggest player in the OS market has declared that it wants to improve the mobile connectivity experience for Windows users. Its new operating system Windows 7 will have enhanced features to support embedded mobile broadband modules.

The company in its blog has announced that it is working with some key players from the mobile and PC industry, such as Asus, Huawei and T-Mobile to make sure that Windows 7 will take the broadband experience to the next level. In the Mobile World Congress, the PC manufacturer Asus displayed its Eee line of PCs with embedded mobile broadband running on Windows 7. The embedded module that was used was developed by Huawei and is one of the first such modules developed for use with Windows 7.

Windows 7 is scheduled to be launched by end of this year, but most expect the release to actually happen in 2010 or possibly even 2011. Microsoft is extremely optimistic about the new OS and has repeatedly said that it will be its best product so far.

Microsoft, which dominates the operating system market, is known for having released products like Windows XP and Microsoft Office, which have become household names. Rivals like Apple and Google are seen as the biggest potential threats to Microsoft in the future, but so far, they have been unable to make a significant and sustained impact on the Redmond, Washington based company’s biggest products’ market.

VoIP phone systems are used with Voice over Internet Protocol technology. VoIP is the technology used to transmit audio as data or Packets over the Internet to either a computer user or to a landline telephone. VoIP is increasing in popularity, as it is highly valued for its great quality, low cost, sometimes completely free and has incredible features. VoIP phone systems are a viable solution for business needs as well. This will also allow long distance calls for either free or for just pennies compared to traditional phone services.

You can also use VoIP technology by using Instant Messaging services that have voice options enabled. These include, AOL, Yahoo Messenger with VoiceInstant Messenger, Ebay’s Skype, MSN and even Google has started their own VoIP messenger.

When using VoIP services, you can simply use a microphone and speakers to communicate with your caller. You need a High Speed Internet connection to allow for your calls to be in real time, and you will also need a soundboard and computer that is up to date with VoIP technology. You may also need a phone adapter for converting standard telephones into VoIP phones, or a VoIP phone.

VoIP phone system adapters are another means of communicating with VoIP. A VoIP phone adapter will connect between your standard telephones, and your Internet modem. Your phone adapter will come with installation and user instructions. Generally, you will need to power off your computer, then connect the adapter to your Internet modem and then plug your telephone into the adapter’s phone jack. Power everything back up and you should be good to use your phone. You will need to make sure that you have VoIP service previously installed.

You can also purchase a VoIP phone, specifically designed for use with your VoIP service. VoIP phones come in both corded and cordless forms. VoIP corded phones come with many features. You can purchase a desktop phone that includes speaker phone, Call Waiting, Hold, Speed Dial, Transfer, and programmable keys such as Menu, Dial, Volume, Transfer, Cancel, and Headset or Speaker mode.

New 2 line VoIP corded telephone are also available. Some of the features that come with a phone include 3 Way Conferencing, phone to phone/PC or phone to gateway direct dial. These VoIP phone systems are perfect for small businesses or for use in the home office.

VoWiFi is another option which is becoming popular. VoWiFi stands for Voice over Wireless Fidelity. This is the use of VoIP over a wireless connection. A VoWiFi phone operates by using a wireless network’s access point. The advantages of using VoWiFi, is that you can easily pick up network signals or “hotspots” for free. However, VoWiFi will not work if it is out of a wireless range, and immediately you will be terminated from your call. If you have a wireless network that you are local to, you will find VoWiFi to be a great advantage and extremely cost effective.

Another popular choice in VoIP phones is the cordless VoIP phone. These cordless VoIP phones are not the same as VoIP wireless or VoWi FI phones systems. These phones are similar to cordless standard phones. They will work in your house, but not outside, apart from your basic VoIP service.

Issues with network connectivity has driven the need for Hybrid VoIP phone systems. A hybrid is a cross between a cellular phone and VoWiFi. A Hybrid will place your call when you are in your cellular network range, and then, to prevent roaming charges, can pick up free VoWiFi by entering a hotspot. This is a great combination of two technologies and time will tell where the hybrid phone will evolve in the future.

In conclusion, VoIP is an advancement in telecommunications that is here to stay. Whether you use your computer, and Internet Messaging program, a VoIP phone adapter, VoIP cordless or corded phones, VoWiFi or Hybrids the future points to VoIP as the telecommunication method of choice. Today you can choose from VoIP phones, headsets, and even VoIP videophones that work as a web camera incorporating video with your audio. Talk has become very cheap or even free with VoIP phone systems!
